The whole encyclopedia thing made me look for other encyclopedias, and I found an entry by Patti Haskins on the Encyclopedia of Crafts, a 70s series of books I did not know but that apparently is kind of retro kitsch cool, and then I looked at her flickr and found this which I like.

It's on a hillside in Italy and can be seen from space! Knitted by, apparently, grandmothers, although I don't know if that was an underlying requirement, that they be grandmothers, it's 200 feet long and 20 feet high and will be up there until 2025. From Telegraph, a British newspaper.

I saw an exhibit of this yesterday in the Winter Garden downtown New York and it was so cool. I then found out more about it in a knitting magazine, and here is the official web site, theiff.org, with instructions. Did you ever try to crochet something round and flat and ended up with something wobbly? That's basically what this is about. Adding stitches along the way, more than you would normally.

I wish I'd come up with it, why don't I ever come up with this stuff?

Pattern thread

I do a lot of stuff with pattern thread, and it fascinates me.

How do they make it, first of all? I'm sure it's simple but I don't know.

And it always turns out really different than you would imagine. It looks one way all balled up and another way altogether when it's crocheted. I think it's because the colors look much more blended in the ball.

St. George in Portofino
